A common issue with LED dimmability is sudden turn on or turn off when you try to adjust light levels with your dimmer switch. Or you may have "dead areas" as you slide your dimmer switch. Or your LED lamps may simply flicker or flash when paired with certain dimmer switches.

This symptom occurs when you are trying to dim the lighting down and the light suddenly cuts out before you slide to the bottom of the switch. This is the inverse of "drop out" and occurs when you're sliding the dimmer switch on, to increase light levels, but your LED lamps suddenly turn on at a brighter level than you would normally except.

This symptom is present when your lamps don't respond to the adjustments you're making on the dimmer switch for certain sections of the dimming scale. This symptom occurs when you've dimmed your lamps all the way down, but they continue to glow or produce small amounts of light. This symptom is understood as rapid, sporadic pulsing of your lamps when paired with dimmer switches. A dimmer switch looks just like a normal switch that you may have in your house.

For instance, it could be that your dimmer is not really connected to your lights. To fix this, you will have to go through the installation procedure again. This is one of the largest sources of complaints regarding leading edge dimmers and can manifest in a number of different ways.

The first is the LED light simply not working, no matter what position the dimmer is in; this is usually an issue with the dimmer itself. All dimmer switches have an operational range which denotes how many Watts of lights they can work with. Because LED lamps use a lot less power to operate than a conventional filament or halogen, they may fall under the minimum load required for the dimmer switch to operate.

Trailing edge dimmers are the more modern type of dimmer switch, they operate in a different manner to leading edge dimmers and suffer none of the inherent disadvantages that type does. These devices operate in a manner which does not produce some of the undesirable traits found in leading edge dimmers. Before you complete any electrical work, always remember safety first. This means that you need to switch off the mains power at the fuse box and isolate your selected circuit by removing the circuit fuse.

Any products replaced or installed must be according to local Building Regulations. One important factor to note is to write down exactly how the old switch was wired before disconnecting it, so that you can wire the new switch in the same way. As already mentioned, before completing any electrical work, always remember that safety is of the utmost importance. To be sure that it works, turn the power supply back on and test the brightness of the room.

Under "Part P" of Building Regulations, it is stated that you are allowed to repair a light or dimmer switch, however you need a certain level of competence to do so: if done incorrectly, there are risks of fire hazards or electrocution, which could put you and your entire property in danger.

Additionally, a licensed electrician will have all the equipment needed in order to complete this job, so that everything is properly done.
